Every year, Wisconsin students and parents gear up for what they hope will be a successful and exciting year at their school of choice.  And yet, every year, many families find themselves making the difficult decision to change their child’s learning environment for one reason or another.  For many, online school is the answer.

Whether it is due to the unique travel demands that elite student-athletes face, academic difficulties, social issues such as bullying, or the uncertainty that most Americans are dealing with as a result of the coronavirus, online school offers an attractive solution to many common challenges.  This year in particular, many families are coming to us seeking a better online learning setup than their brick and mortar school can offer.  There are a lot of kinks to work out before a school can provide truly excellent online classes, and with 14 years of experience in online education, iForward has worked through them.  However, it can be overwhelming to make such a big change in the middle of an academic year.

If you are thinking about making the switch to online school right now, here are a few helpful things you should know:

  1. Remember that you’re not alone – The stress of switching schools mid-year can feel like the sky is crashing down.  You may be feeling isolated and discouraged in your current situation.  But the truth is that over the last four years, over 61% of iForward applicants have applied in the middle of the school year.  It is actually more common for students to come to us in the middle of the year than the beginning!  This means that your situation, while unique, is also completely normal from that perspective.  You’ll meet many peers who have gone through it, or who are going through it with you.  Plus, iForward’s caring team of advisors, counselors, teachers, and office staff will be there to support you every step of the way.  You’re never alone at iForward, and you will get through this!
  2. If you can, wait for a quarter or semester break to make the jump – Whenever possible, we advise students looking to switch to our online school to wait until a quarter break.  The advantage of this is that it allows time for our enrollment staff to help you navigate the necessary paperwork while giving you time to breathe and get things in order.  Not to mention, it will help us learn about your story and make sure that we get you on board with as much support as possible from our advisors and guidance counselors. If this isn’t possible for you, we understand and will work with you to get you on board as quickly and smoothly as we can.
  3. Sync up with iForward's block scheduling system - Another advantage of waiting until a quarter break is that it allows students to come into iForward right at the beginning of their new classes, rather than joining part-way in and trying to play catch up.  Unlike many other schools, iForward operates on a “block schedule system”, meaning that our students take fewer classes at a time, for shorter periods of time – a quarter, rather than a semester – to allow them to dive deep into every class.  Our students have completed their first round of classes and are starting their second when the second quarter begins, making it an excellent time for new students to hop on board.  You won't be playing catch up, which can go a long way towards your success.
  4. Give us a call before you send in your application – As you might imagine, our enrollment staff handle a lot of applications every year.  There are always things on the application that you might have questions about, and we don’t want you to worry about whether you’ve gotten everything correct.  Nobody likes filling out a form twice, so please don’t hesitate to give us a call!  We want the onboarding process to be as seamless as possible for you.  On the other hand, you may just have some questions about online school, or perhaps you need some guidance on how to get ready to make the switch – for example, what sort of questions you should be asking your current school.  Our team is standing by for that sort of thing, too.

If you’re still reading this, we hope to hear from you soon.  We believe that iForward is the place where you (or your student) can find success this year, and we are excited to be a part of it.

Second quarter begins on November 3rd, 2020.

iForward is an online school serving students in grades K-12 across the state of Wisconsin.  We are in our 14th year of online education, making us one of the most experienced online schools in the state.  To apply, click the button below!
